San Francisco's Ferry Building is a paradise for food lovers looking for the freshest and best ingredients and meals.
San Francisco's Ferry Building was built in 1898 and survived 2 earthquakes. It is home to the most popular farmer's market in San Francisco on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is a super busy hub of activity; tourists buying souvenirs, locals buying fresh ingredients and catching the ferries, delicious restaurants every few steps. There are cheese shops, meat shops, bread shops, gourmet ice cream, fresh honey, ceramics, anything you could think of, under one roof.
The fruit, while no better than anywhere else, is priced like it is. It is good to grab a few things in the market and from a few shops and have a picnic while you visit a museum or relax in your hotel. Some grapes in the market, cheese and bread from the shops, a bag of nuts and bottle of wine.
Cowgirl Creamery has the best, freshest cheese in the whole building. Try to sample a few before making a decision as they are all really excellent and you might find a new favorite. They offer tours and cheese tastings. Next door though, is their restaurant, where they offer their milks and cheeses on sandwiches, salads, coffees and desserts. Their breakfast sandwiches are definitely not to be missed. Reasonably priced with creamy cheeses and ham or jams on fresh bread, you'll always come back for another.
No trip to San Francisco is complete without eating some fresh sourdough bread. Although it comes with almost anything you order from oysters to pasta, can you really ever have enough sourdough? If that's not your thing, grab another bread, made fresh everyday, and judging by the lines, there's never a day-old bread to worry about. But really, why would you want anything besides sourdough??
Each shop is like a portal to another world, with little treasures everywhere. There"s something to fit all age ranges and all budgets. A gift for yourself or a gift to someone else.
Heath Ceramics is filled with handcrafted, locally made ceramic dishes and tableware. They are beautifully designed in a variety of charming colors. There are bowls, plates, vases, cups, and so much more. Each design is so cute, you'll want everything there. I picked up a Glass Carafe with lid for only about $5. They also offer tours of their facilities so you can see up close the beautiful craftsmanship that goes into each piece.
Visit the ferry building on a Saturday and you will be in a heaven of food and delicious smells from the outdoor farmer's market. Inside the Ferry Building, on any day is a unique and unforgettable experience. Buy some gifts and eat some oysters, sample cheeses and people watch. It is great for any age from old to young, you will definitely enjoy yourself.
