Located in San Gabriel, Yoshino Sushi is a great spot for amazing sushi at a good price. The food is fresh and delicious and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.
It is no secret to anyone that knows me that I LOVE sushi. And most other Japanese things. My family usually wont ask me where I want to go eat since they already know the answer: sushi! It is really almost a miracle that I haven't got mercury poisoning at some point (knock on wood).
My mom and I stumbled upon Yoshino Sushi while running an errand. We were craving sushi, like usual, and looked at the closest place near where we were. It is located in the city of San Gabriel on Valley Boulevard, nestled in a shopping mall. It is the center of the mall so it is not easy to miss.
What is Nigori Sake?
All sake is made from fermenting rice. Nigori sake is an unfiltered sake, giving a cloudy or milky appearance. Normally, sake is filtered to remove rice solids, giving a crystal clear appearance. The rice solids left behind in nigori sake give it a unique appearance. In the bottle, these solids separate and require a little bit of shaking to blend it all together again.
These sake are usually slightly creamy and are the sweeter of the sakes. They are best served chilled and not recommended to be served warm or hot. Put it in a ice bucket while drinking to get the best flavors.
Because of the sweet flavors of this sake, it goes excellent with spicy food like curry or spicy noodles. It can also go great as a dessert drink or served alongside dessert.
It is really easy to drink since the flavor is very mild and sweet. It is not harsh at all and can really be paired with any Japanese or spicy food. It also pairs well with rich and well seasoned dishes.
Now onto the sushi! We came here during lunch, yes we drank at lunch.... We got the lunch bento sets. For the price, they really give you your moneys worth. The quality of everything was also really amazing and fresh. For $15, the set came with soup, salad, rice, and 2 items of your choice. I chose the sushi and gyoza, while my mom had tempura and sushi. The portions were very generous as well, with 5 pieces of sushi and 9 pieces of sashimi!
The salad was really great with a gingery dressing containing sesame flavors. The gyoza was also excellent. Perfectly crispy on the edges and super soft on the inside filled with pork. The sushi was extremely fresh and delicious. I was melt-in-your-mouth good. I ate it all, ok, all of it!
The atmosphere was also very pleasant. The waitress was really polite and quick. Everything was very clean and open with a unique and authentic feel to the entire restaurant. There were families, schoolkids, and a couple dining as well which means it is a place that has something for everyone. The sushi chefs were also laughing and talking, something you rarely see in Japanese restaurants. The sushi counter looked really fun and I would love to go back and sit there!
While it is far from me, I really hope to go eat at Yoshino Sushi again. Definitely stop by there if you are in there area. Unfortunately they dont have a website, hard to imagine, I know.
Are you craving sushi now??
