Moved from their old location in Hermosa Beach, Ragin' Cajun is as good as ever, with new menu items and a great staff.
Ragin' Cajun Cafe was located in Hermosa Beach for 20 years before their lease ran out in 2013. Reincarnated as a food truck and finally reviving their restaurant in Redondo Beach in 2014, they are back and better than ever. With a vintage atmosphere, authentic menu, and great bar, I highly recommend going, if you've never been. My parents loved the old location and used to frequent it often, and we've been as a family on a few occasions at the old spot, so it's great to see it back and thriving. My mom and I stopped in for lunch and they have really good lunch specials, featuring your choice of half a sandwich and soup.
I chose the Bayou Bisque soup; a chicken and sausage corn soup served over rice. It was a perfect size for a lunch portion and there wasnt too much rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly and it was very savory, although it was pretty spicy. It was so good though, I couldn't stop eating it.
For my sandwich, I ordered the Chicken Po'Boy with BBQ sauce. It was as good as it looks! Juicy, seasoned chicken on a super soft and chewy French roll, it was delicious every bite. The only thing I didn't love about this sandwich was that it was super spicy, which I wouldn't have minded if the soup hadn't been spicy as well. There was really no relief from all the spice. It was still excellent though, and one of the better chicken sandwiches I've had.
I recommend ordering the coleslaw or another side, to cool your mouth. The slaw was slightly bland but if you put some in your sandwich it will really add another level and bring the heat down a little bit.
Did you think I ate Cajun food and didn't order beignets?! Well I ordered them and it was worth it! If you haven't had them, they are light, fluffy pastries topped with powdered sugar and are similar to a donut. They are so popular in Louisiana, they are even the state donut. Traditionally they are served alongside chicory coffee. Maybe I am just biased with my sweet tooth, but this was definitely the highlight of the meal. They were so airy and soft, you almost hated to put your fork into them. They came with a side of the most deliciously rich and savory chocolate sauce to drizzle on top. I want another right now!
