This is a super delicious bowl of rice topped with a crispy fried pork cutlet simmered with onions and scrambled eggs in a salty sweet sauce.
Most recently, katsudon was featured in Yuri on Ice!!!, though it has been shown in lots of shows. It was especially prominent in Yuri on Ice!!!, a show abut Yuri Katsuki, 24 year old Japanese figure skater nearing the end of his career without much success. He is coached by his idol, Viktor Nikiforov, a Russian figure skater, who is inspired after seeing a video of Yuri, performing one of his past figure skating routines. It is about their blossoming relationhip and Yuri's renewed love and success in figure skating.
Now where does Katsudon come in?!
Yuri grew up in a family-owned hot springs resort, whose house specialty meal is Katsudon, which he ate often. He also celebrates his skating wins by indulging in Katsudon. It also acts as a bridge between the Japanese Yuri and Russian Viktor as something they both can enjoy together.
If you've never had Katsudon, it is simple and delicious. The pork cutlet is fried before simmering in a sweet and salty broth. The onions are lightly sautéed and egg is poured over everything. The whole thing cooks just enough for the eggs to cook before its gently placed over warm rice and topped with green peas or green onions.
While it is a very filling meal, it is often served with miso soup and traditional Japanese pickles.
